Greetings from Bury Park A Memoir Sarfraz Manzoor 9780307388025 Books

Fascinating insight on how a young Pakistani Muslim man was inspired by Springsteen’s lyrics and philosophy and by his own work ethic to move out of poverty. Sarfraz’ s love of family is deeply evident.

Greetings from Bury Park A Memoir Sarfraz Manzoor 9780307388025 Books Reviews

Bury Park is a neighborhood in Luton, a rough suburb of London that has been the home to many Pakistanis who immigranted to Britain. It was to this suburb that Sarfraz Manzoor's father brought his wife and family when he had saved enough money to have them come from their Pakistani village and join him in 1974. Sarfraz was only two years old, so his memories of life in Pakistan are not vivid, but he has written with great clarity about the issues surrounding a Pakistani son growing up in England.

Sarfraz Manzoor is now a journalist who can competently describe his feelings as a boy who didn't quite fit in either with his white schoolmates or his Pakistani family. Where he found his niche, however, was as a devoted fan of Bruce Springsteen and his music. He was introduced to Springsteen's songs by a Sikh friend from school, and almost immediately fell under the Boss's spell. Throughout the book he refers to ways that particular songs seem to capture his situation in life. He also made a concerted effort to attend Springsteen concerts whenever he could - including traveling to the U.S. for one shortly after the 9/11 attacks.

The other main focus of Manzoor's memoir is his father. As a first-generation immigrant, Manzoor's father worked very hard his entire life to try to make a better life than he would have had in Pakistan. Yet he was a traditional Pakistani in his views of all things British - seeing them as too liberal, thus there was near constant conflict with his children about Muslin values versus white attitudes and actions.

This memoir gives an excellent picture of the lives of Pakistanis in Britain as well as an interesting documentary on how one man's music can affect another's life. I found it to be entertaining as well as enlightening and would recommend it to others - particularly those who like Bruce Springsteen's music and those who enjoy examining other cultures.

Armchair Interview says This memoir is an excellent example of how music crosses cultures.
Actually I haven't read it yet - but will because Bruce. But I'm writing this to say Has anyone noticed the erroneous Booklist review up above? Confederate something? Hello? ....@ maybe clear that up....? Even thought @ing isn't really appropriate here...Oh well, I tried...
Arranged marriage- after which abstract ideas have the people lived in the eighties and nineties? In this time, there are only Pakistani families or British families, but both of them live together, were not possible. The book "Greetings from bury Park" shows this strange situation between Muslim and western culture, in which the protagonist, Sarfraz Manzoor, reports about his difficult life. He is a writer and broadcaster, and he lives in London.
Sarfraz Manzoor arrived in Britain in 1974 with his mother, brother and sister, to unite his father in Luton. His father worked very hard and so, he tries to appropriate his son's lifestyle with his duties. However, Sarfraz were not only influenced in his working life, in addition, he has to balance both a British and Pakistani Muslim. This effort, in the search for his identity, was going to dominate his life and for me the saddest parts of the book. He was not able to organize his future and the search for his true love. He always follows his father's instructions and according to my opinion, Sarfraz has not his own life. The love to music of Bruce Springsteen, which he divided with his Sikh friend Amolak, is the most beautiful part of "Greetings from Bury Park".
Sum it all up; "Greetings from Bury Park" is a collection of aspects of Sarfaz Manzoor 's life. It shows his difficult lifestyle with the conflicts with his parents, the enthusiasm to Bruce Springsteen and the reactions to the attempts in London and New York. These points influenced him in his experiences on his way between western and Muslim lifestyle. To my mind, Sarfraz Manzoor was a poor man in those days, in which he could not evolve his perceptions of a perfect family life. In the most chapters, Sarfraz could not get one's will and his family designated his life. Therefore, I had wished an evidence for his future life and his concept about love and marriage, in the end of the book.
it sucks
Great read
I love this book. It arrived my house before I had thought.
Apart from the author's connection with Springsteen (which as a fan myself I really appreciated), the book provided a nuanced and sensitive account of the immigrant experience from Pakistan to Britain over two generations. Highly recommended.
